In 1958 Tom Ferderbar studied with renowned photographer Ansel Adams at his Yosemite National Park workshop. Ferderbar was recently honored with a one man show of his 1958 Yosemite photographs at the Downey Museum of Art. Now, over fifty years later, these works return to be shared with Mariposa County. You can see some of these photographs at the Mariposa County Arts Council 5th Street Gallery.

Join the Habitat Protectors of Yosemite at our weekly drop-in program. We meet in front of the Valley Visitor Center every Friday until Labor Day. Work session is 9AM to noon. Volunteers help protect and restore plant and wildlife habitat while working in the most scenic areas in the Park. Get involved and meet new people. Take an active role in managing your National Park. Individuals and groups are welcome.

Free Art Class in Yosemite Valley July 1, 2009 - July 4, 2009 |

Times: 10AM - 2PM Location: Yosemite Art Center in Yosemite Village
The Yosemite Art and Education Center offers free classes with a variety of resident artists each week until early October. Classes meet at the Art Center in Yosemite Village and then go outdoors (weather permitting) to paint, draw or sketch scenes from Yosemite Valley. Advance sign ups are recommended but not required. Mariposa Evenings -- Live Music July 3, 2009 |

Times: 7PM Location: Mariposa County Art Park, Hwy 140 & 4th Street
Through the support of many local merchants and individuals, local musicians perform each Friday and Saturday evening at 7PM in the Mariposa County Art Park, located at Hwy 140 and 4th Street, downtown Mariposa. Bring a blanket or lawn chair for best seating.
This evening features Adam Burns Band, an Englishman in Yosemite with a sort of "Dave Matthews" vibe.

Coulterville 4th of July Deep Pit BBQ July 4, 2009 |

This is the 40th Coulterville Fire Brigade Deep Pit BBQ in Coulterville Park. You may wonder how "Deep Pit BBQ" works. The firefighters prepare the beef the night before, seasoning it and wrapping the meat in foil and burlap bags. It is then lowered into the fire pit, covered with hot coals and left to roast for the night. The morning of the BBQ it is unearthed and there it is, ready for you to eat. Meals include Beans, salad and bread.
If you have to leave town, meals to go are available, but we hope you'll stick around for the day of fun and socializing. Entertainment will include a raffle, watermelon-eating contest, water slide and other games and prizes for kids and adults.

Times: Carnival at noon, grandstand gates for the Fireworks open at 7PM Location: Mariposa County Fairgrounds, Hwy 49, 1 1/2 miles south of town
The Mariposa Kiwanis Club presents its annual "Old Fashion" 4th of July Carnival and Fireworks show at the Mariposa County Fairgrounds. The Carnival (admission free to all) features children / family centered activities. We will have a Bounce House with water slide, small pool area and obstacle course. Traditional "competitions" include three-legged race and balloon toss. There is a raffle with great prizes such as Chuckchansi Stay and Spa package, Queen's Inn / Idle Hour Winery Stay and Wine Tasting and many more. Food on sale includes hot dogs, chips, water, soda, Indian Taco's and ice cream. There will be no alcohol sold or permitted on the fairgrounds as this family event is alcohol free.
The Fireworks show starts at dark and lasts approximately one hour (gates to the stands open at 7PM). Admission is $5, kids 8 and under are free.
