Transportation and Travel to Mariposa County, California

 

Travel By Auto

The town of Mariposa is a three to four hour drive from Bay Area and South Bay locations, two and one half hours from Sacramento, and one and one half hours from Fresno. Yosemite Valley is another hour from Mariposa.

Coulterville is about an hour east of Modesto, forty to forty-five minutes north of Mariposa, and an hour west of Yosemite Valley.

Travel By Private Airplane

The Mariposa - Yosemite airport, four miles west of the town of Mariposa, is the nearest airport to Yosemite Valley. Its 2252' elevation, above the fog line and below the snow line, makes it accessible year round. The runway is 3310' long and 60 feet wide. For night landings there is pilot controlled runway lighting on unicom 122.7. A 24 hour cardlock provides 100LL or 80 octane aviation fuel. Transient tie downs are available.

With advance reservations you can arrange for a rental car at the airport. The nearby Airport Inn in Princeton (Mount Bullion) carries out the tradition of airport restaurants offering better than average food at reasonable prices.


Travel By Commercial Airline

The nearest commercial airport is Fresno, about a two and one half hour drive to the town of Mariposa. Other major airports are at Sacramento, San Francisco, Oakland and San Jose.


Travel By Train

Amtrak serves Mariposa and Yosemite Valley by a bus connection at Merced. Through ticketing is available from anywhere on the Amtrak system. For travel details and reservations, see the Amtrak web site.


Travel By Bus

Scheduled bus service from Merced to the Mariposa and Yosemite Valley is provided by VIA and YARTS.
